Safer Kids and Homes, Inc. was founded in 1994 by Patti Norton Laird, a former school teacher and preschool director. As an educator and mother of two children, Patti is acutely aware of the need for convenient, accessible child safety education and in-home safety services for families.
Patti is an officer and a board member of The International Association for Child Safety, which allows her to stay on the cutting edge of child safety concerns. In her current work as chairperson of the Board of Certification for Certified Professional Childproofers, she is developing the childproofing industry’s first comprehensive certification program.
An established authority on home safety and baby proofing, Patti is a frequent speaker for parent groups and child safety forums throughout South Florida. She is a hands-on childproofing professional, and certified as both a Child Passenger Safety Technician and an Early Childhood Outdoor Play Inspector. WPLG-Channel 10 Eyewitness News, NBC-6, The Miami Herald and The Sun-Sentinel all have relied on Patti's expertise when covering stories on child safety.
Janice Pruett has been a vital part of the Safer Kids and Homes team since 1996, and is a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. The mother of two adult children, she is a child development specialist with a background in preschool education and also counseling mentally disabled adults. Prior to joining Safer Kids and Homes, Janice was Registrar at Plymouth Congregational Church Preschool in Miami.
Janice specializes in custom carpentry and design of child safety and adaptive equipment, and can effortlessly assemble trikes, strollers, highchairs and more. As the hands-on manager of Safer Kids and Homes’ retail and web stores, she is frequently the first point of contact for customers.
Janice is responsible for the thoughtful selection of developmental toys and stimulating books in our Safer Play department. She is equally as comfortable helping parents and grandparents choose the right stroller, car seat, gate or safety items as she is selecting the right gift or toy for a child.
An avid sailor who is active with the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, Janice is also a die-hard college football fan (“Go Canes!”).
